Why Prioritise Mental Health Education in the Construction/Trade Industry?
In the CONSTRUCTION Industry… EVERY 2 DAYS a life is lost to suicide = 190 lives each year! Workers are 6 x more likely to die from suicide than work-related accidents!
And….we can’t blame the Covid 19 Pandemic. Yes of course this has been hard on so many people however these statistic have been across 10 years.
This industry has been suffering for a long time. It is time to make Mental Heath and Emotional Wellbeing a priority. Time to make a change.
So why is this industry affected so much with mental illness?
Many reasons combined together,
Male-dominated industry: this industry sees a growing number of women entering but remains predominantly male
Men often refrain from discussing their emotions, particularly in the company of other men. It is a generalization, but many men have been culturally conditioned to conceal their feelings and emotional states.
Influenced by phrases like, “You’re crying like a girl”, “Man up” “Don’t be a sissy.” “Stop being soft.” “Just get over it.” “You’ll be right mate.” “Boy’s don’t cry.” “Be a man of few words.”
Research suggests that repressing emotions and feelings can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical health.
High Stress and Pressure: Tight schedules, budget constraints, and demanding physical labor. Meeting project deadlines and quality standards can create significant stress and pressure.
Long Hours: Extended work hours, especially in high-demand periods. can lead to exhaustion and reduce time for self-care and relaxation.
Stigma Around Mental Health: There is often a stigma attached to mental health issues in the construction industry, making it difficult for workers to seek help or openly discuss their struggles.
Lack of Mental Health Support: Many construction/trade companies do not provide adequate mental health support and resources for their employees. The absence of mental health programs, counseling services, or awareness initiatives can leave workers without the necessary tools to address their mental health needs.
Substance Abuse: Some individuals turn to substance abuse as a way to cope with stress and pain. Substance abuse can exacerbate mental health problems.
Efforts are being made to address mental health concerns in the construction industry, including awareness campaigns, workplace mental health programs, and initiatives to reduce stigma. However, there is still much work to be done to improve the mental health and wellbeing of construction workers and reduce the prevalence of suicide and mental health issues in the industry..
What motivated Rebecca to pursue transformative change in this field?
With almost a decade of hands-on experience running her own Glazing Company, Rebecca deeply understood the challenges and pressures that the construction and building industry can place on its workers and management. She knew firsthand the daily and weekly setbacks, frustrations, anger, and disappointments that pile up, often making it tough to manage these intense emotions and carry them home to loved ones at the end of the day.
Having experienced the life-changing power of principles that helped her overcome both business and personal challenges, she saw a unique opportunity to make a difference in an industry where anxiety and depression rates were alarmingly high. Motivated by her own journey and her desire to help others, Rebecca is on a mission to guide individuals in the construction and building field toward striking the right balance between performance and mental wellbeing. “Her expertise and commitment to the industry make her a valuable resource for companies looking to improve their mental wellbeing of their staff and overall business culture.
